iOS 101: using folders and spotlight to organize Your Home Screen

My assessment of the scientfic folders are the most underused part of iOS 4.2 (or earlier for the iPhone). I'm simply amazed when I see someone's main screen mata a single icon. Now I'm not advocating reliance solely on folders; access to the most commonly used applications (mail, OmniFocus, and my current app writing Favorites) is Super, but the Group of second-level applications into folders is equally a good idea.

As evidence, and present the current iPad home screen:

Thanks to the introduction of folders and easily group similar applications. Anything related to Reading (e-books, Goodreader, Zinio, Instapaper, etc..) are in Reading. My applications are all in their own folder, such as iWork applications. I have taken six or seven screens in the app and reduced to one.

Create folder is easy: simply drag the application icon to another icon and iOS will automatically create a folder and name it on the basis of the categories application Marry two game applications and you will receive a folder with the name of the game. You can change the folder to whatever you like, so not Apple gives you named.

You can also perform this task directly in iTunes, select your iPad in the sidebar by clicking on the applications tab at the top, and then dragging the icon on the top of each other in the same way as on the user's screen, the iPad. You are when you configure the folder for the first time, iTunes is the best way to move a ton of applications around.

There are several problems already start to folders. The first is, despite the fact that on the home screen, there are open spaces, when you install a new app, iOS you want to install it on the screen two. It is also possible to obtain in a trap "where stick this application?". Fortunately, the easy solution to this problem is to Spotlight search.

If you swipe to the right on the home screen will make search Spotlight. Type in the name of the application you want to run and will be displayed in search results. Click this icon to run it. Also within the scope of this notice, while not Spotlight is a good way to search in certain applications, too. Whenever you need to search for notes introduced in application notes or specific e-mail, use the Spotlight search.

It should also be borne in mind that the double Home button shows the applications have been used recently. You can run them from there, too. If the application is enabled multitasking, will load quickly and Show the latter application was in.

As you would imagine, I'm the biggest folders. My Internet is Safari, Twitter, Flipboard, Reeder and other applications that rely on an Internet connection to operate. Because the folder is open, when you close the application, it is very easy to quickly run through My RSS feeds and Twitter routine. Although my electronic book readers are in my reading, you will usually run Spotlight them open. Same with parties and other iWork applications. Try several different folder configurations and workflows, and I guarantee you'll find that the folders do force the iPad or iPhone is easier.

Apple releases a new version of the OS X Lion Developer Preview

Apple released a new update of Mac OS X Lion developers at the end of Wednesday. Preview is the second version of the OS X Lion to be released to registered developers Mac for testing. The new version is build 11A419, while the previous compilation used ID code 11A390.

It is not yet clear new compilation brings to the table. We have detailed some of the changes in the OS X lion in the preceding subparagraphs, and reports suggest that a number of stability improvements must be made to the OS before General Release sees it, so perhaps some of these are included in this update.

Apple is said by some to be close to release candidate GM, which immediately precedes the arrival of public transport version. OS X Lion film release in the summer, as soon as possible, as , the Conference of the WWDC planned for June 6-10. At least you'll probably see a version of the operating system much closer to the width of the Release previewed at the event.

Vimeo application for iPhone includes editing tools

Vimeo finally introduced application Official iOSvideo sharing site. The application enables access to the Vimeo video online, but stresses it can record, edit, and submit your own videos to the service first and foremost. This is a wise step for the service that you want to distinguish themselves from the clear market leader YouTube, which is pre-installed on any iOS navigation device.

When you first start the application, you can sign for or login to your account, then immediately displays the Vimeo on your "My Stuff". But on the first tab in the navigation bar at the bottom of the app is "My Videos", and allows you to shoot new video directly in your application or add an existing library to your iPhone. If you already have to upload videos to Vimeo, displayed on this screen, too. The second tab along the bottom navigation bar is the section of the recording, which allows you to create video projects using multiple clips, taken from the library or directly from within the application.

On the Recordings, you can combine video clips, and use a simple video editor built into the application, which lets you add Vimeo title simple and text to movie clip, Create transitions and add sound track. Editor is pretty bare bones, but is also which is remarkably well considering it is not even the basic purpose of the application. It feels like it can do the job great shooting, editing and publishing simple, impressive videos short, all without leaving the Vimeo.

Vimeo had its time with the release of the application (Ryan Lawler had scoop on his way to the existence of planned back in September of last year), but I think that the company finally went to the great choosing offers more than just basic access to web content. The application is, of course — for viewing and get access to the contents of the saved and the tools to manage — but also makes a lot more. It is clear attempt at Vimeo on behalf of the appeal to the creator of the content, and should provide a site with a slight edge in attracting mobile uploaders.

Of course, due to its impressive video creation and editing tools, it also has a limited scope. Vimeo app is only compatible with iPhone 3GS and 4, iPod touch (gen), and the iPad 2. That leaves many iOS loop. Is calculated risk on behalf of the company, Vimeo, because the company clearly prioritize achievement above casual customers browse creators. Given how solid capture and edit application page is, I think that this is a smart move and one that represents a better long-term investment than just rushing to market with watered-down, but more generally consistent, the product.

New draft of the Kickstarter stylus for iPad Crowd Redesigns

Updated. If you are looking for the stylus right to use the Web the iPad, a new project Kickstarter may be the best option available — and at the best price, too, because at time of payment is finally to be so unusual financial decision. Cosmonaut is a new project from the creators Glyph iPhone 4 tripod mountand has a smart new approaches to design stylus iPad.

Cosmonaut is a project of the stylus on the first iPad, I have seen which truly takes into account the unique constraints and problems using a stylus in conjunction with large capacitive touch screen. I have several different narecznym iPad line, but Pogo sketch from ten one design is my weapon. Although it is my preferred tool, which does not make, that is not necessarily one. I still have many problems with screen reading my as a confusing entry secondary, and using the iPad as one would a traditional pen and pad combo box simply does not work (although some applications provide automatic detection, wrist slightly easier).

Unlike Pogo sketch, and many other narecznym the iPad like Cosmonaut will not take the pen as his inspiration for the project; Instead, look at the tag of the array. Is the concept that the co-author of the Cosmonaut Dan prepozyt made reality back in November on their own DIY buildand which he and partner Tom Gerhardt clearly saw the long-term value in Pastor argues that writing on the iPad is not like using a pen because of low fidelityand since wresting the hand on the surface of the device is no-no. instead is quite accurately reflects how we use arrays, ie. quick and dirty write ideas and information. Artists are highly capable of creating masterpieces on iPad, but for most users, the point is to get the idea out quickly without much attention to minor points.

I like also that Cosmonaut seems to be a small rubber Tip, as opposed to the traditional style of them felt used on the most up-to-date narecznym capacitive. And like Glyph, this new design looks like a remarkable test pen in engineering a simple, elegant, a product, which puts emphasis on extreme usefulness.

As a Kickstarter project Cosmonaut will require the involvement of the various sources in order to achieve its objective of funding. This time around Provost and Gerhardt tried a slightly different approach to the language spoken by the majority of the Kickstarter projects. Instead of setting the thresholds of the various prizes for each level ($ 25 provides a pre-order, $ 45 won two, etc.), is asking investors to put whatever they believe it is worth. Any amount more than $ 1 a pre-order Cosmonaut, although the final retail price will be around $ 25. It is a very interesting experience, especially considering that this is limited to 3000 sources, which means that if all the Pledges the absolute minimum, the project 50.000 $ funding objective is clearly not be achieved.

The strategy is risky, but that should prove telling glimpse into what kind of premium people placed on good design. Check the video below of the product in action and think about what would pay for such a device. If you feel like sharing this figure in the comments, I'd love to hear what you think.

Update: and he was Dan and Tom and replied to my questions immediately after the publication of this article. Here are questions sent and their response in full:

TAB: Why go with the model wages as you want this time around? What happens if you hit the limit of the backer before you hit the covers financing?

Tom: Dan and I decided to try to pay what you want to model, because we were interested in the social aspects of it, and we wanted to give back to the community of Kickstarter. If we are to reach our limit backer, but not fulfilled our purpose of financing, we believe, a very interesting dynamic build from the sources of the project. Will there be any advocates? Will there be any large contributors, who Tip the balance? Price in excess of the above, below, the purpose of financing? We will see, but it will be exciting first for the web.

TAB: every success with the Glyph, you'll find projects funded through Kickstarter, and what did you hear the impact of what happened this time around with a cosmonaut?

Tom: The Glyph taught us, that can never be too simple. Although we strive for simplification with the Glyph, still we managed to confuse some of our sources, so this time around we tried to keep the dead simple. We can also leaned to never underestimate the power and generosity of the crowd, so this time around we put our full trust in them.

TAB: on the back of the success of the Glyph, you probably could have easily secured a more traditional VC funding for this project. Why return to Kickstarter?

Tom: Dan and I want to maintain our direct relationship with our customers, really our colleagues. So for us, Kickstarter makes perfect sense. They let us know, what they produce, we need to keep them informed through process and lead us to be accurate. We can lose by VC.

Tip reference in application in iOS more social 5

The owner of the iPhone recently uncovered evidence ( 9t05Macthrough the) social picture sharing component built in iOS 4.3 when using image-editing application to a third party. App has shown that there is normally an album library photo iPhone specifically for albums "Photo Stream". Information suggests that this is a picture of the social sharing feature, which is not yet active in iOS and which may be on track to release iOS 5.

Previous evidence regarding the Photo stream iOS, which comes from the earlier digging through the code for the iOS 4.3, appeared again in January. Essentially the system seems to operate by allowing users to create a publicly viewable albums, which are automatically updated on other users ' devices, so long as these devices are subscribed and have the appropriate permissions to view the stream.

New discovery shows that the system is largely already in place throughout the iOS, Apple will probably only need to remove the switch to turn it on in the next major update to its mobile software platform. Also shows that Photo streams should be available to another application, and that the applications can also potentially be able to publish directly to the shared streams, creating in iOS photo sharing social network system that can compete with InstagramSciezki and giving color. In fact, if Apple allows you to share your photos social for all built-in and easy to use, these applications may have a hard time staying afloat. HDR photography applications are not exactly burning up the charts, because Apple baked that iOS 4.1, for example.

Apple also is considered to have worked on the revision of its MobileMe cloud services package. New MobileMe is recognised as being freeand include a number of social networking functionality, including service type latitude "Find my Friends ' Google. It may be that the Photo stream still has not been released, because the linked closely with overhauled MobileMe, so both must run at the same time. In fact, its almost a lock that the pictures shared in this manner would be stored in the cloud not (device to device, always on Internet connection sharing is practical in terms of battery life), but whether or not it will fall under the umbrella brand specifically MobileMe is quite another matter.

iOS must deliver something to a large increase in iPhone JumpStart in the face of competition from Android, especially if Apple isn't planning on unveiling of new equipment in June (something that still I think it is unlikely). Built-in social sharing feature, the system which iOS ownership social membership is exactly the kind of thing On which could shake the market, especially if Apple makes a smart move and provides such features free for all owners of the device.

How do I replace the optical drive in your MacBook SSD

Translate Request has too much data
Parameter name: request
Translate Request has too much data
Parameter name: request

Just before the latest MacBook Pro updates were released, rumors swirled that the new models would adopt solid-state drives (SSD) in addition to hard disk drives (HDD) and drop internal optical DVD drives across the line. That sounded perfect to me. As I dove for the couch cushions in search of spare change to add to my computer upgrade fund, I considered that I didn’t really need a new computer. What I wanted was SSD. But SSD tech is expensive — really expensive if I wanted the same amount of storage offered by my MacBook Pro’s HDD. Luckily, there’s a way to have both. Inspired by others, I decided to remove my optical drive and install an SSD in its place and pair it with a large hard drive.

I love this setup. I have the blazing fast speed of the SSD (it really does feel like getting a new computer) and I have enough room for everything I need thanks to the spacious HDD. There are some other advantages that might not be obvious at first glance, too:

You can install an alternate system on the HDD. I have Snow Leopard installed on the SSD for everyday work and I have Lion installed on the hard drive for testing. You can use Boot Camp to install Windows on the HDD because it is a true internal drive. Boot Camp won’t work with an external drive, but it works great with this setup and it doesn’t use any of the space on the precious SSD.I have lots of room for Virtual Machines on the 500GB HDD so I can create other testing setups as needed.

Yes, I have to connect an external optical drive every time I need to install something from disc, but once I was done with the initial setup I haven’t needed it that much. It really has proved to be the perfect arrangement  for my needs. Here’s how you can do it with your own MacBook.

The tools. Click to enlgarge.

To get the space requirements for your SSD, select your drive and “Get Info” to see how much space is used (make sure to empty the trash first!). Now check how much space is being used by the User folder(s) on your computer. The difference between the two is all the system files and applications that you will want to put on the SSD. The Users folders themselves can go on the HDD.

As an example, I was using about 300 GB on my HDD. The Applications (including CS5 and Xcode), root Library and System folders take up about 53 GB of space. My Home folder takes up about 240 GB (and my iTunes Media is on a network share). I wanted enough room for my system files and applications on the SSD, and some room left over for a portion of my user files so that these frequently used files would benefit from the speed of the SSD.

Using my computer as an example, I could conceivably get by with a 60GB SSD (I have 53 GB of system and application files, as mentioned). But that’s cutting it too close for the system files (OS X needs 4-5 GB of free space just for temp files and such things). And it would mean that all user files would have to go on the HDD. On top of that, early reports indicate that SSDs benefit from extra free space to keep them running fast. In my case, that would mean at least 80 GB. I wanted to get a drive from the high-performing OWC Mercury Pro line, so I moved up to the next available size of 115GB. If you’re struggling with the decision, it’s always a good idea to buy as much storage as you can afford.

I have held various certifications in Apple hardware repair starting back in 1994, but I honestly didn’t need any of that training to upgrade my mid-2009 MacBook Pro. Any uni-body MacBook or MacBook Pro is pretty easy to get into. iFixit.com is a great resource for a detailed photo walk-through of the steps to remove the optical drive from your Mac. I placed the optical drive in an external slim USB enclosure so I could continue to use it, and I also have an external Blu-ray drive for any DVDs or CDs that I might need.

I also removed my existing hard drive, placing it in an external enclosure, and installed a new 500 GB 7200RPM drive from Seagate in its place. You might choose to stick with your computer’s existing HDD, depending on your storage needs.

The bracket for your SSD. Click to enlarge.

The next step is to attach the SSD to the bracket, after which you can install the bracket itself where the optical drive used to be. As I mentioned above, I bought the SSD and the bracket in a bundle from OWC. They helpfully include the tools that you need and provide online video guides for the installation.

The inside of the MacBook with the SSD installed. Click to enlarge.

Setting up your new drives in Disk Utility. Click to enlarge.

I decided to do a clean install of the system to the SSD and then copy over select files from my user folder. I booted from the OS X installation disc (I actually have an external FireWire 800 hard drive set up for this purpose – saves 20-30 minutes), formatted both drives with Disk Utility and ran the installer. When that was done, I booted to the SSD, ran the guided setup, Software Update, and installed my core applications.

There are a couple of choices here. I could move my entire user folder to the HDD, but I wanted the benefits of the SSD for some frequently used files from the Home folder. I decided on a mixed solution where I could keep some user folders on the SSD (~/Applications, ~/Desktop, ~/Library in particular) and the folders with hefty storage requirements (Documents, Downloads, Movies, and Pictures) on the HDD. I kept the ~/Music folder on the SSD so that iTunes would be able to quickly load the iTunes Library file, which is the index to all of the media files and the associated metadata like ratings and play count. I had previously set the preferences in iTunes to point the iTunes Media Folder location to a network share, so all of my media files are actually on a network share. I suspect that most people would want to keep their ~/Music folder on the SSD and use the advanced preferences tab in iTunes to move the iTunes Media Folder to the hard drive.

I copied the old Documents, Downloads, Pictures and Movies folders from my original HDD (now installed in an external enclosure) to their new home on the big internal hard drive. Once I had them in place, I was ready to fix up my Home folder.

The trick to splitting up your Home folder so that some stays on the SSD and some points to the HDD is to use symlinks. Symlinks are a function of the UNIX underpinnings of OS X to create something like an alias, but at a low-level in the filesystem. I created links to point certain directories in my Home folder to locations on the HDD. After creating the links, those folders appear to be in the “normal” spot in my Home folder, but they don’t use any room on the SSD as they act like an alias that points to the HDD. Even thought the image below shows “Alias” as the kind for these link files, don’t make the mistake of creating an alias in the Finder. You will need to use the command line to create a symlink.

This new setup has everything I need. Incredible boot times, fast application launching, and overall snappy performance. I have a triple-boot system with Snow Leopard, the developer preview of Lion, and Windows 7, with room for a few Virtual Machines too. Now that the Mac App Store is taking off, I don’t even have to hook up the optical drive very often. It’s beautiful.

If you’ve done something similar, I would love to hear about it. If you want to try this setup and have questions, I’ll try to answer in the comments below.

Controversy: there is no application in this

Recently, the App Store has been in the news a little for some applications it accepted, and controversial seems can savvy policy holders to direct marketers to bypass traditional media route and go straight to the exposure of large use now. Forget newspapers and TV; the best way to exit the word is via the App Store and Apple creates controversy when it accepts or rejects the app but it is good for Apple?

Apple's adoption of the app that contains information about the "ex-gay" because one check mix. People were talking about it everywhere, and petitions are flying left and right. Regardless of Your position on app adoption or content application developers walk away the winner. To post a review, Apple requires someone to download ("purchases") even if it is free (app). Niesprawiedliwi (and some supporters) rushed to buy the product only for the fact not excited about it. So this application a short not only of the press, but tons of sales during its brief existence, too.

Similarly, an application that helps you find the speed and DWI checkpoints inspired to law enforcement and even lawmakers U.S. to debate the issue. Until the Congress got involved, I had no interest in the application, but make sure that downloaded it after all. I'm predicting the infamous Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church will shortly submit to the app and their rejection of publicly displayed by Apple, too.

The amazing thing about these applications is that they are merely packed app version information developers had on their websites. Both the "ex-gay", and the speed trap Web sites for users and probably zmagaly advertising before application. The relatively low price of a set of developer and programming now everyone says about them. The owner of a small business in me gives them a huge thumb for getting their messages in a cost-effective manner.

Heck, when Apple download app "ex-gay" recently and when (and anticipate) they pull app speed traps, we talk about both all over: more developers get more hits to your Web site and more supporters among many niesprawiedliwi. Paradoxically, if Apple rejected these applications, it would be for almost as much publicity. When Apple rejected ("excuse me" not approved ") the voice of Google app, more people began to ask what was Google voice. When Apple rejected political cartoonist, I wanted to see what was drawing.

This user is great for Apple. Suddenly many iPhone owners want to know how to download these applications to try out or speak out against them. This probably means more credit card numbers, Steve spoke of those registered in its presentation and more users App Store in General. More eyeballs on the App Store is good for developers. Talk about not losers in the economy of the app!

Apple loves the spotlight, and the app approval process is a large part of its ability to maintain this focus. These applications Apple store people with fringe and its product. We simply do not hear anything this user on the platform Android. Android generally accept everything, so it is much more difficult to obtain the word — positive or negative. With something as controversial as "curing" homosexuality Apple not individuals will be to complain? Sure, but in order to post their complaints in a place where it would be most visible to the application by the intended audience, users have to log in and Buy a very app they derided.

As a lightning rod for controversy over the App Store is also terrific machine PR. may not be the most above Board to draw attention to the reasons or the product, but it is effective and will probably be until (if ever) Apple lays down certain rules final approval process for App Store. And that is not something that is unlikely to do so any time soon, if people keep clicking, downloading and purchasing.

The patent describes the OS X spaces on the iPad

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently published a new patent (via the Cover Apple) describing a system by which spaces, Apple to pursue many independent desktops on a single computer can be restored to the iPad. Patent, which Apple requested in 2009, does not make sense too much in the accompanying pictures — unless you think that may provide more guidance on the future of the iOS.

Spaces on the Tablet apparently will act as spaces for OS X, allowing the user to set different workspaces, and then display these separate desktops eyes all at once with the bird in the thumb nailed a view that would enable it to quickly switch between them. In iOS in its current state, this may mean that all applications recently opened, which are typically located in the tray multitasking; Each as its own space separate from the thumbnail previews app last State between closures.

What the patent actually shows, however, is a system by which applications appear on separate desktops in the very same way as now on OS X, Which opens a fantastic possibility that Apple either is or has at the same time created more OS X-like desktop interface on iPad, with the possibility of many existing applications open on each, for example.

Mac OS X, the lion is the next version of the operating system on your computer's desktop and notebook Apple and use strongly with iOS. Even small, system-wide changes as the fact that the direction of scrolling now been withdrawn in the lion and everywhere the presence of new buttons slider to switch between changes of preferences indicate that Apple touch in mind considerations about OS X, even if it is not misleading in its composition Mac touchscreens.

Similarly, with each new iteration, iOS becomes more sophisticated and more capable of dealing with the same sorts of tasks like its predecessor the desktop. Printing, multitasking, by opening the file types in different applications that are associated; all these are features which, although still in some ways limited, gradually made their way in iOS.

The trajectory of the evolution of Apple with both products is clearly pointing the same directionand may even be tended towards if this patent is an accurate depiction of the future, and if the iOS and Mac OS still on the road to parity. Portable equipment will only get more efficient and more comprehensive over time, which means that one day, they compete with their desktop and notebook computing precedents, as far as the type of software can be run. After that date, Apple can move to the highly flexible single platform operating system for all devices to maximize Cross-compliance and reduce the cost of in-house development. If things moving in that direction, it may explain why his father and former head of OS X Bertrand Serlet and Apple recently took on the methods of.

What do you think? This platform Unified iOS x something to see in our lifetime?

iPad 2 scrap resources lead to a Shift in strategy for the supply of

Updated: iPad 2 is still difficult to obtain, in both the U.S. and other countries where it has internationally launched. Fortunately for would-be buyers, Apple is taking action to strengthen and supplement its existing supply chain in order to move more iPads more quickly.

In order to increase the supply of the iPad, Apple is reportedly considering a new supplier lists for a tablet. In accordance with of Taiwan Economic NewsAU Optronics Corp., which is the world's fourth largest LCD maker by volume, was taken by Apple made for flat screens in the iPad 2. This would mark the first time Apple used AUO for the supply of the iPad. The report says the rate Apple will pay for displays is about three or four times the average rate paid by others for displays of the same size. Possible AUO was able to negotiate very favourable exchange rate in order to guarantee a significant percentage of its total production capacity of AUO.

The original iPad supply constraints was also mainly due to the inability to source enough displays. View LG, one of the suppliers of basic screen iPad, went even on record as saying it couldn't keep up with demand from Apple due to strong sales of the tablet PC. Adding third-party iPad 2 should significantly increase the ability of Apple to get products into the hands of the wrong people.

We reported previously that the Apple was mulling the decision to increase the pay for in order to ensure the supply of items is needed after the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. DigiTimes reported Thursday that in fact, Apple has agreed to such a transaction. In accordance with this article, Apple will absorb the additional costs for its made Japanese components upstream in exchange for efficient shipments. Multiple vendor components through the Apple source their parts from Japan, where the principle of power brownout seriously affect the operations of manufacturers of consumer electronics.

If Apple has signed such an agreement with AUO, other companies producing tablets may feel the heat as Japanese suppliers priorities Apple to receive a dwindling pool of supply. Big question will be companies which decide how Apple, that will be able to absorb the additional costs in return for the supply of short-term undisrupted.

From the times of the ship by the Apple store still listed three to four weeks in the u.s. and internationally, and the lines are still forming in Apple stores worldwide are the express request of the persons still far deliveries. We hope that these additional measures taken by the Apple help, make sure that more customers get what they're after in a timely manner.

iOS 101: Take Control notifications

Reporting system in the iOS is useful, but you can get a little intimidating sometimes. Because the notification on iOS demand your attention by blocking what you're doing until you click ' Cancel ' or ' view ', you can get annoying, if you receive a notification every two minutes. Fortunately, there is a way to disable the notification on the basis of the app.

To change which applications can send user notifications, open the Settings device application, and then the notificationtap. In here is a list of all applications installed that are able to send notifications, as well as the switch to turn off all notifications at once. However, I don't recommend killing all notifications, because usually you one important, such as those from the applications list to remind you of deadlines, stil displayed.

To edit the notification will send a certain application, select its name in the list. You will see up to three switches — sounds, alerts and Badges — depending on what options to support the app you can select Here. as application notification behavior. Alerts option is should be disabled if you want to stop message on a blue field. Label Specifies whether the application should show the number of the badge (red circle) on its main Screen icon. And sounds, as the name implies, controls whether or not you will receive a notification sound when you receive a new notification.

In my opinion, for the application that is not a valid best thing to do is turn off alerts and sounds and leave the labels on. In this way, you can still determine which applications you should bring to the attention of glancing at their icons, but you will not be able to pester with alert messages.

I prefer much Oi experience without having to select the blue messages every three minutes. Add option to turn them off was good decision Apple pages, and that is a good idea to know how to use.

How to use collections to manage Your iBooków library

Between the prior purchases and Self-restraint is weak I now library e-book in iBooków several titles of several hundred strong on my iPad, and it is constantly growing. Simply sort by title, author or genre simply does not intend to cut it. Fortunately, the introduction of user-manage collections in iBooków adds some much needed depth to the Organization of the e book iPad.

Collections in iBooków to create a subfolder in the library sort, where you can house related books. In my case, as you can see from the screenshot below, has created a collections for a series of books, photography, general resources (manuals for my cameras are there, along with e-books on photography and you purchase, because you can mix and match the e books and PDF files), game information, authors (books by and about) and much more besides. It is all quite simple to implement, as you can see the following instructions.

Step 1: getting books

If you use iBooków only for the purposes of the ebook, get books is a piece of dough. If, like me, you have to many suppliers exploded library you're going to need to break DRM (what to do at your own risk, and only by means of you dig up) on them, and then import them to iBooków via iTunes. Problem management of collections of books had already in the library before updating also had so you may want to re-syncing of all books before the administration of the collection.

Step 2: create a collection

At the beginning of iBooków contains two collections: books and PDF files. Of course, books are in ePub books, and any imported PDFs are, well, PDF files. To create a new collection, simply press the new button at the bottom of the Collections. Give the name of the collection of new and you can start with go.

Step 3: making Stuff in the collection

Press the Edit button in the upper-left corner of the library. Select the book you want to move to the collection, and then press to move to the upper-left corner of the screen. Select a collection of destination and the items will be moved. All this is to him.

Not yet run into too many restrictions on the use of the collection. Most of them you can work around by using the search you can filter by specific authors, titles, etc. The biggest problem is that all of your management of the collection has become in the application; You cannot manage them through iTunes, where tad easier is by using the keyboard and mouse. Apple really should think about adding this feature to iTunes, you really must do some growing up to become multifunctional equipment Manager and media Apple positioned it as.

Got any tips on how best to use the collections? Share them in comments.

iOS only holdout against Android Onslaught

Market research comScore company has released its study of some 30,000 mobile subscribers from November to February, while the first actual data on the impact of iPhone Verizon in the us. IPhone market share increased by 0,2% in a period of three months, from 25 percent to 25.2 per cent. That relatively small increases (Android will see seven percent) has generated a large amount of provocative commentary, such as Business Insider declaring "iPhone dead in the water," but the reality is somewhat more nuanced.

After the first Verizon iPhone went on sale on 10 February, which means less than three weeks of its sales were included in a period of three months examined by comScore. Secondly, going back to the end of January, comScore took part in the 24.7 percent, down from 25 percent in December, the iPhone market. Growth from January to February was actually 0.5 per cent. That compares the litte more favourably to Android, which saw an increase of 1.8 percent. For Apple but also suggests at the end of a sharp increase in sales in February, which coincides with the launch iPhone Verizon.

Finally, there are actual phones into consideration. While the number of mobile subscribers in the UNITED STATES by means of devices, Motorola fell almost one percent, and RIM, Apple dropped 0.2 percent increase by almost one percent. Which has a triple increase of Samsung, leading OEM Android. This is important, because Samsung, as well as any other device manufacturer, shall have access to the whole of the market in the U.S. some subscription 300 million. In comparison, Apple reaches approximately 200 million with AT&T and Verizon, although that will change should AT&T complete its proposed acquisition of T-Mobile. Which might Add another 34 million potential iPhone users, but not until 2012. This is where the fault, if any, lies in the current strategy for smartphone Apple: the lack of universal access, carrier agnostic for iPhone.

However, despite that failure, the iPhone has managed to maintain its market share at around 25 percent in the light of the widespread availability of Android. In the very RIM of the falls from 42% to 29%, and Microsoft and HP have seen their market share halved in the last year. It may be more accurate to say iPhone is treading water in the United States, while the Verizon iPhone finally is putting little breeze in the sails. With the possibility of new hardware, software, and wider availability of all levels of the fight is counting Apple zaskarzac mistake.

Mac backup strategies for the world day of the backup

Thursday is world-wide backup day, when we're celebrating a precautionary measures for loss of data (definitely worth celebrating). The best backup strategies take a layered approach to provide different levels of protection. I'm going to focus on the three layers of protection on a Macintosh computer: online, nearline and offsite backups.

Online backup refers to copies of the files that are directly available. Some examples of online backup or copy files to USB thumbsticks or an external hard drive and cloning a disk with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. Online backup is convenient because you do not need any additional software to access the backup files and save time, which would be designed to restore files from another archive. Cloning is especially good for system disks, because you can boot the computer and work with them immediately instead of waiting to reinstall everything or restore files from a backup archive as of time machine.

Examples:

Nearline backup are usually saved in the format of the archive is saved to storage that is attached directly to your computer or available on the same local area network (LAN). Nearline backup, you must use additional software to manage copies and provide some additional benefits, such as compression, incremental updates, file versioning, and maybe even a centralized administration and security. The disadvantage of nearline backup is that you can't boot from them if the startup disk is disabled and cannot directly access to the files, if the backup disk to another computer. Time machine is the most known example for Mac users, but other software like Retrospect can be used this way too.

Examples:

Offsite backups are simply a copy that is stored in a different physical location from your computer. The purpose of wymontowany backup is protection in case of fire, theft, or some other catastrophic event such as lightning or floods, which would result in the destruction of both the computer and the backup storage next to it. Backups offsite, by nature is physically removed, take to recover and restore and are really only there to disasters. You can rotate the wymontowany physical disks, use the cloud backup services such CrashPlan or as a service as Synchronizerfilesync.

Examples:

These different layers can be combined to provide the amount of protection for your needs. Here are three ways that you moderate, casual and hardcore can implement online, nearline and offsite backup for your important files.

Online

Copy of the most critical files on a USB drive. Repeat this process every quarter.

Nearline

Buy an external hard disk and enable time machine.

Offsite

Take the second portable USB with critical files for the work.Get a free Gmail account and email the encrypted disk image (using the Disk Utility program) files to yourself (don't forget the password!).Get free Synchronizer account and copy the files to 2 GB.

Online

Clone a system disk to an external hard disk with SuperDuper! Please update your clone at the beginning of each month.

Nearline

Use the capsule time for your automatic backup. If you have a portable computer, do not underestimate the convenience of having a time machine, simply run while the computer is turned on without having to remember to connect anything.

Offsite

Buy more storage Synchronizer with niszczarceZarejestruj be CrashPlan, probably the best cloud backup service for Mac users

Online

Clone system drive to two different, external hard drives with SuperDuper! Removal of a clone of one site and rotate them every week.

Nearline

Offsite

CrashPlanThe Synchronizer in addition to the CrashplanSecond you are really cloned driveIf really hardcore, set up the second disk, time machine and rotate this wymontowany as well. You will need to manually switch the discs in time machine preferences each time you rotate the disks.

Regardless of the level of readiness (or paranoia), is a backup strategy for you. Take some time to this worldwide day backup select one and implement it before there is a reason for regrets putting it longer.

Color proves chasing trends is not a good design App

On paper, color app iPhone (and now Android) who grabbed headlines Wednesday for securing 41 million dollars in startup prefinancing, it looks quite good. This is the pictures and video, application sharing (these also) with surprise geo local (ditto), which is built around the the concept of group (natch).

Colour also has some influential people behind it. Founder Bill Nguyen is the man who sold streaming music service LaLa to Apple in 2009and he has a history of successfully building and sales of other businesses, too. And color brought recently on board Patil DJ, who was Chief Scientist at LinkedIn.

App itself works well and looks with a minimum intuitively designed, but you would be wrong to think somehow you are not using it correctly. Only really works if there is a group of people in their immediate vicinity using an application at the same time. Otherwise, you will see a little more than a steady stream of independently you happen to capture with your iPhone, because the application is limited to displaying images from a highly local.

The color is playing with the concept of fundamental constants, even apart from the aspects of chasing trend I mention above. Photo and video sharing among friends is clearly a proven winner, as can be seen from Facebook on success. And application lowers barriers to entry (although not necessarily for actual use, as will appear below) more than any existing applications login requirement only through social name (not your password, do not sign ups). But even that did not Save him from feeling bad idea in search of a problem.

The application first invalid requiring when the picture is taken before using it. To some extent, which makes sense because the sharing mechanism is so simple, but in contrast to the simplicity of the user name only need to register, asking for a picture and not allowing you to select an existing image on your phone means many users who are not in a position to take one or simply don't feel like you can close the application, and never open it again. And those who comply with this requirement may be early not less put off by their next experience: can you find that no one around you — within 150 feet — is sharing photos, and applications will offer next to nothing.

Alternative case is not desirable either: nearby people are sharing photos and are flooded with images of strangers, together with the implementation of those same strangers can see Self-portrait can be simply rounded up, too, without much warning from an application. In both cases, I think that many will put off enough to stay clear for good.

It is possible to color has more appeal to users who are teenage Mark Zuckerberg talked about when explaining the idea of an expanded service messages on Facebook,, and I am in the category of users who just don't get it. But I think it is more likely is a great example of how, when it comes to applications, 1 + 1 + 1 doesn't always equal to 3. App not only hope to gain by their intersection of many promising mobile trends. Developers are still thinking about how these intelligently trends of integration and it is important to remember that the user experience, especially one following the first run, still is the key to the adoption of a broad app. Color fails this test, and as such, this is clearly not to be the next Facebook, or even referred to as the Instagram for that matter.

iPad 2 is water damage indicators

There is little in life was more disappointing than takes the gadget device for warranty, only to be told, are not eligible due to water damage. iPad 2 owners can rarely have to face this kind of disappointment, in accordance with the new details revealed in the Apple Genius ( 9t05Macthrough).

Interruptions in the iPad 2 performed by iFixit revealed the liquid contact indicators (LCIs), which usually indicate exposure to water have been removed from the headphone plug-ins, where they appeared on the original iPad. In its place the Apple is used new design pin. But according to the Apple Genius database and other information collected from teardowns, LCIs has not yet been moved elsewhere after their removal, and also have been removed from the iPad 2 's 30-pin plug-ins as well. Old instructions for Apple Geniuses detailed how to check two LCIs to the original iPad (LCIs turns red when in contact with the liquid), while the new instructions to advise the Geniuses just to "check SIM card tray corrosion.

The new method will be nearly as sensitive to water contact as using LCIs, but this may be precisely the point. LCIs are was charged with reporting false positives in situations where users should expect their gadgets in order to be able to perform, as well as the use of the gym during training, or in other climates with high humidity and environments. Apple already relaxed its policy on water damage and iOS devices in January, when he added an amendment to the policy, which States that if the customer disputes the reliability of reading the LCI and there are no other signs of corrosion, the device may still be eligible for warranty.

This is great news for owners iPad 2, as there is one less distraction toward getting the device repaired quickly and easily should you encounter any problems. Apple wins also by improving its reputation for providing excellent customer service and in order to avoid future disputes connected with the readings of the LCI which dopelnialy guarantee. The company may end up paying slightly more for warranty service, but if it cuts down on expensive litigation, the net impact on its profit margins may be null.

There is no using My iPad 2 as an umbrella in a pinch or anything, but I'm glad not to be hyper vigilant of how atmospheric conditions before the House. Have been recorded by LCIs before, and may I breathe a sigh relief now that my company your favorite gadget is running. Anyone else feeling the same?

WWDC 2010 sells out in less than one day

Tickets for Apple 2011 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) are no longer sold, in accordance with the Apple's website describes the event. Apple updated the site, replacing the link to purchase tickets (which cost $ 1500) with "Sold Out". Tickets are on sale only around 11-12 hours. By comparison, WWDC 2010 took eight days to sell completely.

This is the fourth consecutive year, Apple focused developer event has sold out, the sale and repurchase the fastest on record. Clearly the introduction and widespread adoption of iOS have a significantly positive impact on the interest of the Conference, which offers training sessions, time's face with the Apple engineers and previews the software features to come. If anyone needed any further proof that the iOS continues to be popular among developers, you can't ask for a clearer than this.

Apple presents also usually the new iPhone WWDC, but there is some question whether it will continue the tradition this year. Apple will definitely be exhibiting outside its version of the next generation of Mac OS x, version 10.7 (also known as the Lion), so that it may take some extra anticipation around the event. Can I get tickets were available, and if not, are you disappointed they went so quickly?

Screen sharing OS X Lion allows multiple user sessions

A new feature of Mac OS X Lion AppleInsider discovered by enables remote users to log on Mac using a user account with the one currently used on this computer and to see their own separate desktop and computing environment.

Version with screen sharing is currently shipped with Mac OS X snow (1.1.1), users can log on to the remote system but will be visible only to the screen that is currently active on the target computer. Mouse or keyboard is shared by the remote computer and the computer using screen sharing for remote access, so you actively contact each, only one can effectively use the destination computer in one time. In the Lion, however, the local user can go about their business without interruption, while remote users enjoy their own separate session.

Also sharing your screen gets some additional tools borrowed from Apple Remote Desktop (ARD), which is a professional remote client management and distribution sells Apple, mainly aimed at business and enterprise users. Sharing screen lifts Observe mode (view, but not control), control mode and the screen capture tool with ARD.

Screen sharing by the new user's logon and support many features of the ARD should make it relatively capable administration offices small, based on the Mac or the management of home network with Macs. It is for example possible to remotely on another computer using an administrator account and change the software installations or perform remote upgrades when a local user is away uninterrupted. Apple seems to be keen on breaking down barriers between the consumer and professional software (the lion of the server will integrated free in regular shipping version of Mac OS X Lion, for example); automate sharing screen is the next step in this direction, and one that small businesses will relish.

eBay sees 12 K iPad 2 sales in two weeks

If you are looking for iPad (2) in the last few weeks and wanted humanity instantly, eBay was a good place to search, so long as does not mind asking price. It appears at least 12,000 people were impatient type (with big wallets, not less), as this is where the iPad 2s were sold through the site during the first two weeks of availability of your tablet PC.

eBay detailed iPad 2 sales info in the infographic below, together with a breakdown of where sales are distributed geographically. The vast majority (65%) iPad 2 purchased via the sites were based in the U.S., which is surprising since last year, U.S. buyers accounted for only 35 percent of sales during the first two weeks following the original iPad launch. Increased anticipation and demand, the lack of pre-orders and lines more places of retail U.S. may account for the increase in the number of national eBay buyers.

eBay buyers paid a premium for significant retail. On average, customers paid almost $ 200, more for the basic model of 16 GB, which was the most popular model, with 30 per cent of the total eBay sales. The second most popular seller, iPad 64 GB 3 G, carried an average additional cost of over $ 400 above the price of the official asking Apple.

Some of the highest demand for the iPad outside of the UNITED STATES come from Canada, Hong Kong, Russia, Britain and Hong Kong, many of which are countries where the iPad or just launched or will launch in April. Concerns delays and global stock shortages are likely to encourage sales in those countries, despite the direct announced start date.

Rocketr provides notebooks to iPhone

Groups are "in" when it comes to applications, and new iPhone app aims to use the group to distinguish its ability to take notes. Rocketr (free) web application is a simple, no-frills, synchronized cloud notes, as the only Official iPhone client. Its most attractive feature is, however, the ability to share notes with the community of editors and share notebooks with even wider audience, too.

In contrast to the Process, which offers catch-all for a wide range of inputs, Rocketr sticks to the basics: white on black text. But that is to say, it's easy. It has a few nifty tricks up its sleeve, not least of which is the automatically synchronize with Rocketr on the website, where you can download notes at any time from any browser, device, capable of the Internet.

But Rocketr goes beyond other applications notes — and even MobileMe with Sync Services — by entering a Note. Firstly, you can add an unlimited number of editors to notebooks, who also will be able to add to and amend the content of the note is added to. Secondly there is the possibility of an unlimited number of public notebooks that will be viewed by other users, who can comment on Rocketr (version of the web site only for the moment), follow and Star notes for later use. Rocketr includes three free private notebooks, and probably, the plan is later added the ability to have more for the price. Rocketr web application is currently only available as a beta, but you can register for an account through the iPhone app without code Invite.

Rocketr you can also add notes by emailing go@rocketr.com with the email address associated with your account (you can add as many as you want), or tweeting with the hashtag # rkt (after an account Twitter account Rocketr). This is a simple, yet effective, making sure you can easily find thoughts tweeted again later on after a few moments, or to quickly information about a file in the RT for later use.

IPhone app allows you to quickly add new notes without leaving the notes view, so to Add a simple button which quickly files what you're working on and raises fresh composition on the screen. See using applications for conferences as an excellent way of tools rapid switching during Q&A, for example.

But its real potential is Rocketr in its social aspects. Ability to follow and be followed by colleagues, as well as other, who have their interests opens a new world, as far as the ability to collect and share informal opinion. Which can be very useful, for example, when working with the pool Editor to coordinate a range of events. Or during the preparation of meals and shopping list to dinner with the extended family.

Rocketr was developed using approach lean startup, and is not yet perfect app (comment must still be made, as I mentioned, and you can create a new notebook using the web interface), but more effective than many other applications of navigation, which are not free, and the developers promise a lot of updates to come. Nathan may intimidate some of its wealth of features, but Rocketr keeps track of things light and breezy, almost as the difference between Log project detailed, stamped and pocket-sized moleskin. If you are looking for smart, capable app notes, which never seems to be just as cumbersome to use and plays nicely with others, give Rocketr a try.

The MLB App Hits One Out of Park with a one month free trial

Thursday is the opening day for Major League Baseball season, and new updates for MLB.com at Bat arrived just in time. This update introduces a number of new features including the ability to view all the games out of the market in live on a free during the month of April.

Typically, live game streaming video is available only if, in addition to purchase the app, you also have MLB.TV subscription access (which you can also now available on Apple TV, by the way). In April, Volvo is sponsoring a free trial of live streaming for all owners of app MLB.com (versionsiPad and iPhone ). Make sure that it is a hit with those who have yet to decide whether they wish to register in full MLB.TV subscriptions, but also some that decided to be taken into account early and pay the full price ahead of the introduction of this feature you need.

The application also introduces a completely redesigned Gameday feature, which displays the pitch by pitch live information about the virtual version of the actual at-bat live for users without live access video. Gameday updated features now ballpark renderings of MLB 10: The Show, a video game for the PlayStation baseball simulation.

Finally, users also will be able to view key plays and occasional live clips, the obscuration of the game included and watch past 2011 season games in the archive after they air. iPhone users will also be able to access the new features in the Ballpark, including check-ins, maps of the stadia, special offers and features social media.

Android users will get a preview of the free month long or access to archived games, but instead, you will receive one free game out of the market in live, daily during the season and all the other new features listed above are derived from the version of the iPhone.

Plan to spend April join My iPad 2 to a television using HD mirror to watch baseball, something I haven't done regularly, because she was very young. This is certainly a smart move from organization looking to attract new viewers, although I find it surprising that still differ applications iOS and not one universal version. We 'll, if you translate into higher numbers subscription after the trial.

3DS, the iPad and the future of games

Nintendo launched its 3DS portable console gaming in the United States on Sunday. While the device does not have the types of weight stocks crashed and the lines iPad 2 generated by most accounts, is good. Nintendo claimed record pre-orders for equipment and projected shipments of 4 million units by March 31. The last forecasts, analyst estimation of the 3 DS easily exceeds the week selling one's ds in 2004. However, despite this success, the company will never be able to receive the degree to which Apple has become the gaming market.

The Reason? As a game developer to put it so aptly Olly Farshi when we were discussing the substance to .3ds, iOS is platform and 3DS is a toy. Toys are something we are more likely to get bored with, but this does not mean they do not have their place. It may seem like a way to characterise the technically impressive new device that successfully brings 3-d experience on the Palm of his hand, but exactly how potential clients will think about the two at the time of weighing the purchase decision.

This does not mean Nintendo will lose in each case. Some users are looking for really toys, not platform. Parent, for example, may not be her children have access (even limited access) to the ecosystem of the reliable app limited only by the decisions of the developers who program (and the guiding principles Apple app review process). The parent may also be reluctant to hand over the costly and still very fragile piece of electronic equipment for the child, which are the iPhone and the iPad, despite offering a competitive price points on their respective markets. Even the iPod touch, while cheaper than 3DS depending on user storage option, really cannot be described as a "toy" with respect to its construction or project.

Nintendo Announces applications, and the loss of support and other additional features for 3DS this could lead to more as a platform in the future, but this does not mean it will really become one. Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime that clear after recently went on record said his company is interested in working with non-amateur. It is these artists, which iOS changing market platform that has become and inspired by the legion of copycats.

That is To say, Nintendo is not "get it?" But even if it may not alter the fact that the iOS deeply changed the gaming market, and Nintendo will benefit most from respecting those changes instead of trying to fight against them. The introduction of 3D to the portable console was good, as clearly positions 3DS in area "fun." No one is going to want to start the project application or invoicing applications on the screen, which allows figures leap on them.

IPad 2 brings many exciting new potential as a game machine, with its Apple the ability to output to connected display full 1080p HD. One title at least is already running, this happened. But the iPad (and other devices in iOS) are everything to everyone. They represent the evolution of the computer model that can replace the games (among others) for some users, but not for all, as home computers never occluded gaming console. Nintendo may finally have to accept that Apple is better non-traditional players than ever may be, but this does not mean its curtains for the games.

Is the iPhone or iPad competitor 3DS? No, and Nintendo generally does good work with treatment it as such (although promises applications often leads to things). Categories are only moving and is bound by some jockeying for position, but in the end of the platform and the toy will be comfortably coexist.
