iSuppli, the company responsible for the exact product teardowns of products Apple, reported Thursday that Japanese earthquake could affect supplies of iPad 2, because at least five components of this device are probably derived from a Japanese supplier, including several hard to convert.ISuppli certain parts have been identified as predominantly probably originating in Japan includes NAND flash with Toshiba Corp., Elpida Memory Inc. of DRAM and touch the glass overlay screen for displaying probably made by Asahi Glass Co. Battery (Apple Inc.) and electronic compass (from AKM semiconductor) are also produced by Japanese suppliers, and so are specialisedthat would be quite hard to suppliers located elsewhere.
Other components may even have been sourced in Japan in addition to the above, but the process always dropped is capable of identifying the country of origin of all parts, iSuppli cautioned. Also note that at least a few vendors Japanese Apple reported that their devices weren't any damage due to earthquakes, but that problems with logistics and other factors continue to affect the supply chain in these establishments.
iSuppli also noted that of semiconductor devices in Japan, at least, cannot again begin full production until all secondary are stopped. According to Dale Ford IHS, which acquired iSuppli in 2010:
Earthquakes from 4 to 7 on the Richter scale will preclude really restart the fabs until the earthquakes stop row with such frequency. Whenever the quake tops 5, automatically shut down.Apple, you can find alternative supplies for NAND memory, including South Korea, Samsung corporation and U.S.-based Micron Technology. Samsung may also provide DRAM, but as far as the other major Japanese ingredients, made to find the relevant exchange may not be so eaasy.
Electronic compass found in the iPad 2 apparently is calibrated very specifically to work with the tablet accelerometer and gyroscope, and is highly sensitive to electromagnetic interference. In accordance with the IHS this means it will not only be listed on a similar product from another manufacturer.
Glass used to protect the iPad touchscreen is considered to be new product Asahi Glass Dragontail, which is stronger than glass in the original iPad. If Asahi is actually vendor, he would pose problems, since the company has reported damage to three of its facilities in Japan. Because the glass is a proprietary, supply alternatives can lead to differences in quality.
Finally, the iPad 2 's battery, while marked "assembled" in China, "is actually made by the Japanese branch of Apple. IHS senior analyst Wayne LAM explains why Apple may have kept their own production for the specified component, making it difficult if not impossible to have it built elsewhere:
Usually battery cells are carried out at the place of Assembly, but because the iPad 2 in lithium-ion polymer battery is extremely thin, this probably requires advanced battery technology cells, which are located in Japan.Of course, the iPad 2 supply levels are least Japan worries now, but this may mean that Apple will be struggling to meet customer demand in the United States, and even can lead to a general deferral of international launch of the latest tablet PC from Apple. Value of shares of Apple dipped earlier in the week, due partly to supply concerns, and although prices recovered yesterday, this last report will not significantly to allay these concerns, either. We reached to Apple for comments, but have yet to hear back.
