The latest report covering the app store sales from research firm Distimo is, and offers revealing insights into the early success of Mac App Store and as a comparison of this latest extension of the sales of software for digital Apple iPhone, iPad and competitive market app. the report contains some of the key takeaways for programmers working in Apple's software ecosystem.
The message is good for Apple. Only two months to run, applications in the top 300 on a Mac App Store now generates half as much income as a single in the top 300 on the iPad App Store. Taking into account the age of the distribution channel, and the fact that the Mac App Store is not guaranteed on each generally found Mac running OS X (only shipped with OS X 10.6.6, officially released on Jan 6 and not all users maintain their OS up-to-date) means only those numbers should continue to increase with the growing acceptance among the general population of the Mac user.
This is good news for developers, too, because according to the report, the average price for a Mac App Store ($ 11.21) in the list of the top 300 sale is seven times greater than the average price of the iPhone app ($ 1.57) and three times greater than the iPad app ($ 4.19). Also free applications are much more of the rarity of the platform. Only 12 per cent of the applications on the Mac App Store is free. If revenues remain high as a Mac App Store load and scale grows, it may become a haven for developers, who are wary to compete to the basement of the opportunity offered by the iOS App stores.
Here a real chance as you can see is for developers to earn on the availability of all three platforms connected by offering solutions for each. So far, only 173 publishers distribute applications in more than one warehouse and Mac App Store is one of those multiple shops in only 5% of cases. Offering applications on all platforms of the three benefits of multiple applications, providing a way to promote growth for the brand, which are strong in the area of iOS, but yet you do not have a presence on the platform, OS X, and how to counterbalance revenue per unit low short by iOS with higher prices offer based on the Mac. Developers hoping to gain greater visibility in the App Store ecosystem should be also noted that Apple seeks to highlight applications that appear in all of its platforms, and even built a special section dedicated to home those titles (App Store link).
A new report, Distimo shows also the Apple App Store ecosystem still before the Android store by a wide margin, particularly as regards the availability of applications paid, even if the supply of App iPhone and iPad are seen as separate entities. IPhone App Store alone possess 314,644 applications in their entirety, while the market for Android has approximately 175,000.
Mac App Store has about 2,674 applications available, which is significantly less than the iPad App Store applications 8,099 had available two months after its launch, but unlike the iPad, Mac App Store not only (officially approved) the method of distribution available for the platform software. The option to continue the Boxed sale, direct digital downloads and other platforms for the distribution of the software as they undoubtedly contributes to slower developer investment in Apple solutions.
One final key takeaway from Distimo report is that the Mac App Store seems to be prompting to restart interest in Mac gaming area where computing platform Apple has traditionally been lacking. Distimo was found that almost 40 percent of the most popular applications Mac App Store are games which applications performance and tools coming in a distant second with just over 10 percent each. Personally, I already more games form Mac App Store than other types of software and the availability of a marquee titles such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Call of Duty 4 in addition to the more casual titles augurs future Mac Games.
